Having a big backyard opens up so many possibilities for fun and relaxation. As you think about the different ways to use your backyard, figure out a couple different hobbies you really want to practice. Hone in on those; otherwise, trying to learn too many things will probably result in learning none of them well.
One of the best ways to really maximize a big spacious yard with mature trees is to build a treehouse. Nothing will get your children more excited than having a little home for them tucked away in one of your trees. Building a treehouse can be quite the process though. So do your research about how to build your treehouse.
You should figure out if the trees you have in your yard are actually big enough to really support a treehouse large enough to accommodate your children. Generally, a branch should be about twice the thickness of your arm or more in order to be able to really handle the weight of a treehouse.
A fire pit is a great addition to any backyard. Corralling around the fire is already an incredibly enjoyable experience to share with your friends and family, but you can really get into it by learning different methods of building fires. Learn the different techniques from the log cabin to the teepee.
You may also want to spend some time learning how to make different fried food. Dutch oven cooking is an art that you can pick up with some practice. If you don’t have an actual Dutch oven, there are also a variety of traditional Dutch oven meals that can be made simply by wrapping food in tin foil and placing it in the fire.
Raising chickens can be a fun hobby to take up. And having a big yard makes it much easier to raise them. You’ll want to start with having a solid chicken coop built to keep the chicks safe and sound. You’ll also want to think about how many chickens you want to have and how long you want them.
Maybe you want to have a couple hens to lay eggs. Maybe you just want to have the experience raising chicks with your children. Whatever you prefer, do your research so you’re prepared to take care of them.
When you have a big backyard, you have enough space to actually embrace gardening. As you think about what kind of garden you are interested in, think about how you want to set it up. You could build planter boxes that you install in the corner of your yard. Or maybe you simply plan to enrich some of your landscaping beds with some of your plants. Or maybe you want to have a garden of different potted plants scattered throughout your yard.
But whatever you go with, make sure you think through your plan for caring for all your plants. Mulch can prevent weeds from growing in your garden beds. You should also figure out a good watering schedule.
In addition to gardening, you can use a big backyard for so many other things like entertaining. And one of the best hobbies to start developing is your love for classic films. Having a big backyard gives you the option to host outdoor movie nights.
If you invest in a projector and a good projector screen or even white sheet, you can use your backyard as an outdoor oasis and a fun place where you and all your friends can enjoy and critique a variety of different films. Play around with the seating arrangement to find the setting that feels the most comfortable for you and your friends.
Another great use of a big backyard is converting some of it into a swimming pool. When you have a large backyard, you have enough space to set aside for your pool and still have more space for other things.
Swimming is a great hobby to develop as well. It is one of the best forms of cardio you can do because the exercise forces you to really control your breathing. Additionally, unlike other forms of cardio like running, swimming has an incredibly low impact on your joints, making it a great long-term exercise option as you start getting older.
Building a pool and getting into swimming are great, but you shouldn’t stop there. Big backyards give you a lot of flexibility when it comes to playing different sports. Get a group of friends together, buy a volleyball net, and start playing volleyball regularly. While playing on a grass field won’t be the exact same experience as playing in a sand court or indoors, it can give you a bit more of a cushion than a hardwood floor but can be easier to move around on unlike a sand court.
You can also use your backyard to get into other sports like baseball, soccer, and football. Simply plan time with friends and family to play these sports regularly and you’ll develop your skills in no time.
One of the most relaxing hobbies you can start in your own backyard is the habit of birdwatching. Truly, the best situation for bird watching is when you have a lot of trees in your backyard where birds can make their home. Spend some time identifying the different bird varieties that visit your yard.
Even more than that, consider adding bird feeders throughout your yard. This will definitely attract more birds to your home allowing you to get to know them better.
Backyard space has such great potential for expanding and developing your personal skills and interests. But while it’s so important to take the time to be outside and develop different abilities and hobbies, make sure that you also take time to simply enjoy your outside space. Sometimes what you really need is to just sit outside in the shade with a good book and relax.
